Here To There
by Daniel Johnson
I am a digital illustrator, trained in traditional methods. For me, computer hardware and software is a tool, just like a pencil, brush, or pen. Art and illustration do not happen at the instrument held in the hand; it comes from within. For me, it’s about the observation of the world around me. The highlight, shadow, reflection, displacement, surface texture, transparency, and contrast are what I notice and what I attempt to depict in digital imagery. Adobe Photoshop is my primary medium now and as it changes and grows, I try to keep up with its new tools and techniques, applying them in unexpected ways to improve my process and the final result. As a teacher, I strive to share what I have learned over years of trial and error so that my students can freely unleash their inner vision. As a digital painter, I keep looking to the next project to see what new approach I can find. It’s not what I do. It’s what I am.
